System Compatibility
Before you purchase your Nest, make sure that your heating and cooling system(s) are compatible using Nest's compatibility checker.
C-wire is mostly not required. It is preferred to have C-wire though as WiFi draws a lot of power. In a system with a C-wire, the Nest charges itself from the C-wire's current and all is fine. In a system without a C-wire, though, Nest recharges its battery when the heating or cooling runs. It diverts a little bit of the power to itself and charges its own battery. (make your own research if your current system does not have C-wire, I will not accept returns based on that)
So, technically, this Nest Thermostat E does not require a C-wire to work. Nest has a built-in battery that can be charged using the heating and cooling wires.
Nest, however, recommends that you connect a C-wire if you already have one. To determine if you have a C-wire, please consult Nest's compatibility checker.
